New Canaan Police say they were alerted that a social worker, later identified as 32-year-old Kelly Howard of Ansonia, was making home visits to treat a juvenile resident of New Canaan.

Further investigation revealed that Howard was providing the juvenile in her care with marijuana and vape pods, according to police.

Howard also failed to report potential incidents of neglect and/or abuse regarding the juvenile to the appropriate agencies, according to police.

A warrant was obtained for Howard’s arrest, and she turned herself in on Thursday, May 9, police say.

Howard was processed and charged with:

  • Failure of a mandated reporter to report abuse
  • Sale of a controlled substance
  • Illegal sale of tobacco to minor (first offense)

Howard was released after posting $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, May 21.
